What is Active-H ? by Gavin Burt D.O.
The effect of Active-H on biological terrain and energy The effect of Active-H on cellular communication and hydration The effect of Active-H on free radicals Who should take Active-H and how much?
So much emphasis has been placed on oxygen as the essential element allowing us to exist on the planet, that we tend to forget the other equally essential element - hydrogen.
Obviously without hydrogen to combine with oxygen we would not have water. However, less obvious is the fact that the form of hydrogen with one proton and one electron has unique properties. Due to its small size, hydrogen easily travels throughout the body. It can also loosely hold another electron (in its outer shell), in which case it is called H minus (H-) or reduced hydrogen. When this occurs H- can freely donate this extra electron to other molecules making it an antioxidant.
Since the H- form is prevalent in nature it could be called a ubiquitous (ever present) antioxidant. Hydrogen when in the hydride (H-) state is found in most organic fresh fruits and vegetables, as well as in water that is actively moving, i.e. rain, waterfalls, flowing streams, and in water that has been treated with electric and electromagnetic fields.
So how do we harness hydride in a more concentrated and readily available form?
The answer is , a patented form of silica microclusters coated with hydrogen and treated in a manner to loosely hold electrons in the hydride form.
The effect of Active-H on biological terrain and energy Independent investigations have taken a twelve-ounce glass of chlorinated tap water and have measured the pH of 7 (neutral) and the ORP (oxidation reduction potential) of +270 millivolts (Eli Tech. 1998). This is to be expected since chlorine is an oxidant or free radical, (missing an electron in its outer shell). Oxidants pull electrons from molecules and thereby kill microbials (bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites), this is the obvious reason for water chlorination. It can also cause free radical damage to healthy molecules which is why humans and animals should not drink chlorinated water.
When one 250 mg capsule of Active-H, is added to the water the pH increases to approximately 8.5 and the ORP decreases to -650 millivolts. This simple observation has tremendous implications for health. First the increased pH has created an alkaline water which will help neutralize the acid terrain of the body, so prevalent due to today's artificial and fast paced life style. Second, the -650 millivolts means the solution is rich in electrons loosely bound to hydrogen.
These electrons are available in the gastrointestinal tract to neutralize free radicals that occur from poor digestion and microbial imbalance. In addition it is likely that a significant portion of these hydride ions are absorbed throughout the body, since hydrogen easily travels within the cells.
Inside all cells are varying numbers of small energy factories, known as mitochondria and the more active the tissue (e.g. the heart) the greater the number of mitochondria. Hydrogen produces ATP molecules (the source of life's energy) by moving electrons along the mitochondrial electron transport chain.
It is an established scientific fact that hydrogen (H-) from food, supplies the needed electrons for the mitochondrial electron transport chain to make ATP. Therefore, it is hypothesized that this is the same location, (the mitochondrial transport chain), where Active-H has an important effect by providing electrons that help to create more ATP. Active-H could thus be considered an ideal mitochondrial food as well as a protector for mitochondrial DNA, which is free-radical sensitive.
This is why so many people are reporting increased vitality and notably increased athletic performance. I have personally noted a significant increase in both aerobic training performance when taking three Active-H: one dissolved in water, and two in capsule form prior to a workout. Possibly even more important are the reports of rapid recovery from infections, inflammations and injuries, both acute and chronic. These recoveries may be due to increased mitochondrial efficiency.
The effect of Active-H on cellular communication and hydration When added to a glass of water, electrical conductivity essential to communication between cells, is increased from 10 to 895 micro moles/cm. As a result nutrients and supplements can be absorbed more efficiently. Scientific studies have shown that Active-H reduces the surface tension of water closer to that of the water in our extra-cellular tissues, thus allowing the water we drink to be more ‘bio-available’.
The effect of Active-H on free radicals Probably the most striking quality of Active-H is its role as one of the strongest antioxidants known today. Our eating habits and living conditions create a high level of dangerous free radicals in our bodies that contribute to the increasing incidence of cancer, viral and bacterial diseases, and other major debilitating conditions, which are all increasing in this century.
Free radicals are atoms, groups of atoms or organic compounds having at least one unpaired electron, which makes them highly reactive and unstable. Some free radicals occur as a normal by-product of oxidation reactions in metabolism but most are caused by unhealthy living conditions that include pollution, poor diet and stress.
As we constantly generate free radicals, they move through the body stealing electrons from healthy tissues in order to satisfy their need, while damaging those "victimized" tissues. They may even steal electrons from our DNA, the command center of our cells, causing the cells to become potentially cancerous.
Antioxidants are compounds that freely surrender electrons to the free radicals, stabilizing and neutralizing them and rendering them harmless. Vitamin C, beta-carotene, vitamin E and selenium are examples of powerful antioxidants. But, these are different from Active-H, in that when they surrender electrons to other free radicals that need them, they become free radicals themselves (albeit weak ones), and they then have to take electrons from each other. This is why it is necessary to make sure that multiple antioxidants are taken together.
Active-H is the only known antioxidant that does not itself become a free radical after it gives up electrons. The molecules present in each capsule of Active-H are many thousands of times smaller and more abundant than the molecules present in a capsule of any other commonly used antioxidant like vitamin C or E. This is why Active-H is considered such a powerful nutrient.
Who should take Active-H and how much? Generally, anyone who requires protection from antioxidants (e.g. undergoing radiotherapy), or who requires more energy, or who requires a balance of tissue pH.
Active-H can be particularly beneficial to smokers, or anyone who lives with a smoker, especially children. Anyone who consumes high amounts of fat in their diet; anyone who lives in an area of high pollution, should also take Active-H.
During cold and flu season, two capsules taken three times a day is deemed appropriate. It's important to know that you must continue taking this higher amount of Active-H for a period of time to help your body to avoid a relapse.
Adults, who consume Active-H for help with circulatory or respiratory problems, or for help with chronic degeneration, seem to enjoy symptomatic relief by taking two capsules three times a day.
For ordinarily healthy individuals who wish to consume Active-H for its extraordinary antioxidant potential, as part of an overall superfoods diet, or as a prophylaxis against illness, often report feelings of increased energy at a level of one to two capsules per day.
The appropriate intake for children five and under is 1/4-1/2 of a capsule mixed into 6-8 oz. of apple juice, or added to 1-2 tablespoons of yogurt. For children up to the age of 12, 1/2-1 whole capsule taken two to three times per day seems to achieve the desired effect. Bottom line, everyone should benefit from taking Active-H.
